Reflection:
Labour That Honours God
Labour is more than
the means by which we earn a living. In the light of Scripture, it is an
opportunity to exercise stewardship, develop character, serve others, and
honour God. Whether our responsibilities involve business, employment,
ministry, family care, or acts of service, our work can become an expression of
faithfulness.
The Bible teaches us
that diligence matters, but so do our motives. A person may work tirelessly for
wealth, recognition, or rivalry, yet overlook the greater purpose of serving
God and benefiting others. Conversely, work performed honestly, patiently, and
with a sincere heart can have lasting value even when its rewards are not
immediately apparent.
We must also
remember that diligence does not guarantee earthly success in every
circumstance. Wisdom, preparation, and perseverance are essential, but the
final outcome is not always within our control. Our responsibility is to work
faithfully with the opportunities and abilities God has entrusted to us,
leaving the results in His hands.
The parable of the
talents reminds us that we are accountable for how we use what we receive. We
should not bury our abilities through fear, neglect our responsibilities
through laziness, or compromise our integrity in pursuit of success. Instead,
we should cultivate the gifts God has given us and use them wisely.
First Corinthians
15:58 offers a fitting conclusion: faithful labour in the Lord is not in vain.
This truth encourages us to persevere when progress seems slow, when
recognition is absent, or when our efforts appear unnoticed.
Reflection
questions:
- Am I diligent and faithful in the
responsibilities God has entrusted to me?
- Are my motives for working shaped
by service and integrity, or by envy and the desire for recognition?
- How can I use my skills,
resources, and opportunities to benefit others?
- Am I willing to persevere in
doing what is right even when the results are delayed?
May our labour be
marked by diligence, guided by wisdom, strengthened by faith, and directed
toward the glory of God.
